As the dawning of a new year brings opportunities and renewed enthusiasm, it is timely to give our best wishes to volunteers managing the village halls, community centres and other community buildings across Cornwall.  What new challenges will you accept for this year?  Perhaps you’re planning to increase the amount of hirers in your hall, maybe the running costs could be reduced, or this could be the year to secure the funding you need for improvements or new equipment.

Whatever your intention, now is the perfect time to make a plan that will help you achieve your aims.  To help you get started we are offering a complimentary guide to business planning for village halls.

It is also timely to say a huge congratulations to Vital Venues members who were awarded significant grants in the last year.  Malpas Village Hall received £250,000 to build a new hall; Lanreath Village Hall received £175,000 for a major refurbishment, Ponsanooth Village Hall received £375,000 for a rebuild, Treverbyn Village Hall received £250,000 for a refurbishment and extension; Otterham & St Juliot Hall received £418,000 for a new hall; and Carnon Downs Village Hall received a whopping £450,000 for a refurbishment and extension.

All of these projects have at least 3 things in common that contributed to their success:

1) the committee is consistently focused on the same goal;

2) they consulted thoroughly with their communities; and

3) they have concise business plans.

So, what can you do to improve your hall this year?
