Are you a community group or organisation considering a new build community housing or buildings project and want to see whether it has the potential to be viable?

Local groups taking on community building projects are now able to test their ideas using the new Community Buildings Checker, a web based planning tool that gives communities an idea of whether their proposed community building, such as housing, sports centres, community halls or neighbourhood hubs will be a financial success.

With the increase in community developed and constructed buildings, this free online tool will help launch many building projects, taking the guesswork out of early-stage planning and giving confidence to groups that they could take on and complete a building project.

The Community Buildings Checker provides an overview of the potential income and costs for both the capital element, such as land and construction costs, and ongoing operational costs such as maintenance, insurance and staff costs, in a useful report.

The tool has the ability to be adjusted to consider different scenarios and options before the planning has begun, which is essential in the beginnings of a new project.

The Checker is part of Locality’s new area of support and advice for Community Buildings through My Community Rights website. It includes a Community Buildings Roadmap that identifies the stages of a community-led building project and the actions needed to progress to completion and occupancy.
